HK Family Activities 23-25 May 2026 🎉

Happy long weekend, everyone!

Buddha’s Birthday falls on Sunday, so you’ve got three whole days to fill. This week’s picks lean heavily into Hong Kong’s best cultural traditions — bun towers, floating parades, island markets. Let’s go!

1. Cheung Chau: Bun Festival & Piu Sik Parade

This is THE weekend for Cheung Chau. The famous Piu Sik parade — where kids in elaborate costumes “float” through the streets on hidden steel frames — kicks off around 2pm on Sunday (24 May). Expect mini politicians, tiny deities, and a lot of pointing from your own kids. The Bun Scrambling Final happens late Sunday night (starts 11:30pm, so maybe not for littles), but the festival atmosphere, bun towers, and street food run all weekend. Get there early on Sunday — crowds are no joke.

2. Lamma Island: Lamma Fishing Heritage Festival

Marine conservation, creative workshops and fishing village culture! A 3-day island market at Sok Kwu Wan with 16+ workshops — think artificial reef crafts, wind chime making, ocean-themed picture books, and fabric flower painting. Market entry is free; workshops require sign-up. It’s chill, it’s outdoors, and you can grab seafood after. Ferry + village vibes = perfect day trip.

3. Shau Kei Wan: Tam Kung Festival

Lazy to head to the islands? Shau Kei Wan's Tam Kung Temple (the oldest and most beloved of its kind) is throwing a big party with nightly Cantonese opera, an international lion dance competition on Saturday and a parade with lion and dragon dances on Sunday. The rundown reads very similar to the Ap Lei Chau festival earlier this year which was amazing so if you missed that one, here's your chance!

4. Causeway Bay: Tin Hau Temple – Mini Fire Dragon Head Workshop

Hong Kong Children’s Musical Theatre is running a hands-on workshop where families learn to make mini fire dragon heads with actual Pok Fu Lam Fire Dragon masters. It’s a deep cut into local intangible heritage — and surprisingly fun for kids 6+. Only 10 pairs, registration closes 21 May 7pm, so move fast. Oh sorry - its Chinese only BUT my guess is crafts knows no language????
📅 24 May, 3–5pm 📍 Tin Hau, Causeway Bay 💰 $500 for 2 people 👉 Register here
